Antique French Silver Slide Locket Pendant Mirror and Frame

$ 580.00

Lockets began to appear in Europe sometime during the 16th century. They were worn to hide good luck charms, perfume, or tiny love letters. Ladies of the court used vinaigrettes, a locket to fill with scents, oils, and smelling salts, as the ballroom heat and tight corsets could cause quite a bit of fainting. The popularity of lockets spread to the middle class where they were given as gifts within a gift, with a painted portrait of a lover’s eye, a small note, or a private token, tucked clandestinely inside.

This antique silver mirrored locket was handcrafted in France around 1900. It features a shield and vine motif on the front with a striped background that flows onto the back of the locket for a beautiful overall design. Inside is a mirror opposite a frame awaiting a photograph. This oval shaped pendant measures 60.4 x 36.4 x 8.2 mm and weighs 18.5 grams. It is hallmarked on the bale and is likely French, it has been professionally acid tested.

This one is a beauty; it would be equally gorgeous on a simple black cord or a nice vintage chain.
