The snow drizzled from the sky as she made her way through the city. She bundled up in her black pea coat and green scarf, secured together with a beautiful brooch that sat off to the side on her shoulder. It looked stately there, like it belonged. Snowflakes landed on her nose and she tried to wiggle them off, laughing at how ridiculous it felt. She was almost home, close to warmth, but couldn’t help a smile as she saw the white tops of houses and snow-lined windowsills.
This antique Arts & Crafts Kensington Art Ware brooch was handcrafted in England around 1910. It was made in silver and showcases a beautiful blue motif. This round brooch pin measures 41.5 mm in diameter and weighs 12 grams. It bears the mark, “KENSINGTON ART WARE C & L” and has been acid tested.
Would it look better on the left or right lapel? On a man or a woman? On a scarf or on a bag? In the center of a blouse or a sweater? Why not try them all?

Art for Arts Sake. This was the driving idea of the Aesthetic Movement in Britain which led artist to create some of the most beautiful artwork of the western world in the years between 1860 and 1900. The idea was that things did not need have a deeper meaning to be made in a way that was pleasing to the senses, that it was okay for an object which was useful to also be beautiful, simply for the sake of beauty. It is an idea which we still hold to this day. The simple lines and motifs of Japanese art were particularly appealing to the Aesthetic artists and these motifs feature prominently in many of the designs of this era, this bangle among them.
Simple branches of cherry blossoms grace the front of this wide silver cuff bangle. The leaves are done in a greenish gold overlay and the blooms in pink gold, it also has a wonderful egg and dart like scalloped edge. This bangle is inscribed to the reverse with “To Mary, 17th Jan(uar)y. 1883.” and the inscription is bordered in a similar manner to the front engraving, making me think that this piece was likely made custom by the jeweler and inscribed by him as well, so probably it was made just before this date in 1882-3. This wonderful bangle measures 25 mm wide from top to bottom and would fit a wrist of 6.5 inches or less; it weighs 37.5 grams. Made in England of Sterling Silver.

Enameling, in some form or another, has been around since the 13th century BC. It took a long time to perfect it, though, some form of metal had to be used with early enamel, to hold each color distinctly apart from its neighbor (interesting note, these little metal bars were called cloisons, hence one name for this type of enameling is cloisonné). In the 15th century the technique of painted enamel was perfected and suddenly the cloisons were gone and wonderful, rich details could be gleaned from this once mosaic-like art form.
This Art Deco locket was hand crafted around 1920. It’s done all in silver and then machine turned to produce an overall engraved pattern, then the locket was fired with a rich opaque white enamel and a fluid lavender enamel which is translucent, giving it a look of constant movement. The shape, the concentric circles, the depth of the enamel covered engraving, all combine to make this a very dynamic piece. The face of this locket measures 37.3 mm from the top of the bale and 28 mm across, it’s 5.4 mm thick. This one opens easily and closes with a nice little snap; it weighs 8.1 grams.
