Antique Arts and Crafts Semi-Black Opal Ring Silver and Gold
“Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?”
I remember, somewhere in the 70’s, seeing the animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and try as I might I just couldn’t quite get all the way over to Snow White’s side. She was lovely, I grant you, but the Queen stole my breath away! I know I wasn’t the only seven-year-old that wanted to be her, just a little bit. I was especially fascinated with her magic mirror, with its iridescent, swirling colors! How could I get one of those things?
This fabulous Antique Arts and Crafts Opal Ring in Silver and Gold might be as close as one gets to one’s own magic mirror. This Semi-Black Opal is big and beautiful, encapsulating a cosmic light show of blues, reds, and greens, and translucent enough to let your skin show through. The opal measures 11.2 mm in diameter and is 4.5 mm deep. It is framed with a braided crown in 9k gold; also in gold, one on each shoulder, is a delicate flower, possibly trillium or may-apple. The band is silver and is 2.7 mm wide, while the face of this beautiful ring is 14 mm top to bottom, 18.5 mm wide, and 4.5 mm deep. It weighs 2.8 grams and is a size 6.75 US. Pictures of opals are generally difficult, this one is no exception, this ring is far more glorious in person.
Made in 1900, this sumptuous ring is a perfect example of the Arts and Crafts style, designed with precision, imagination, and great artistry. History aside, when you wear it, you remind yourself just who the fairest one of all is. It's you! Obviously!
