Antique Arts & Crafts Era Buckle or Sash Pin, 15k Gold with Amethyst and Blister Pearl

     Late Victorian and early Edwardian women’s fashions were all about the waist. Nipped and tucked had way different connotations back then, it wasn’t about doctors and surgery, it was about corsets, corsets, and even tighter corsets. To accent this most desired section of anatomy a woman would wear a sash about the waist and an elaborate and most beautiful buckle at the front, and sometimes at the back as well. I don’t usually buy these as they aren’t used quite as much in fashion these days, but those of you who frequent my site know that I can’t resist a really amazing example of anything. This fantastic buckle, or sash pin, is an exquisite example, indeed.

     Housed in its own original fitted box, this buckle is fully handcrafted in 15 karat gold and is marked as such. It is bezel set with 7 sparkling round faceted amethyst gems that measure approximately 10 mm x 7.5 mm and weigh about 3.6 carats each, for a total of about 36 carats of amethyst. Alternating with each amethyst is a smooth and creamy round blister pearl, also about 10 mm in diameter each. The buckle measures 71.5 mm north to south and 48 mm across and weighs 24.8 grams. The box is red leather covered and is in wonderful condition. This buckle has very definite Arts & Crafts styling and was likely made in about 1900, definitely English in origin.
