Antique Love Knot Bangle with Working Key and Lock, 15k Gold, Dated 1892

It was raining. It was always raining that September.
Ryde had escaped the chaos of the big house and was sitting in the gazebo, already in her wedding dress, looking out over the rose garden.  She was watching the rain, wondering if she was marrying the right man when he rode up on horseback, his hat brim dripping with water. He looped the reins and rushed in out of the rain.   Beneath the wet hat, his hair was disheveled, so out of place, he had always been the picture of perfection. It made him look just a bit venerable, maybe for the first time ever, he looked… real. When he presented her with the box, dry and warm from his inner pocket, she looked at him quizzically and pushed the button. The bangle popped out at her and almost made her jump, her heart fluttered. He took it out and unlocked it, took her hand and looked deep into her eyes.
     "Will you?", he asked.
"Yes." She replied, though it came out as barely more than a breath. He slipped on the bangle and locked it, the click of the lock resonated through her and she felt her resolve slide into place along with it.  Yes, she thought, he was the right one for her, there could be no doubt.  Right as rain.  He threaded the key onto a long gold chain and hung it around his neck, kissed her softly, and stepped back into the rain.
An hour later the sun swept over Scotland and in that same gazebo, under bright blue skies with big puffy white clouds, she became his wife.
This stunningly sweet and exceedingly rare bangle is an absolute beauty. Handcrafted in 15 karat gold, it is hinged at the back and encircles the wrist with a rope of intricate love knots which culminate in a working locking heart shaped padlock clasp. The key to the lock hangs on a tiny chain and has a special hook to keep it out of the way when you're are wearing it, this hook also works as a safety chain. The bangle measures 16 mm north to south at the top of the bangle and the knots are 4.8 mm north to south going around. The bangle is 2.5 inches by 2.25 inches and would fit a wrist of 7 inches or less in diameter (I am exactly 7 inches and that's my wrist in the photo). This bangle weighs 10.4 grams. It comes in its original leather covered box lined in green velvet. The box is marked with the name of the retailer, one Archd (Archibald?) Struthers, of 54 Leith St., Edinburgh. The bangle is engraved on the back of the lock with "Ryde.  September 7, 1892.
Okay, so maybe it didn't happen exactly like that. In truth I've no idea who Ryde was or what the significance of the date is. However, records do show that it was both wetter and sunnier that September in Scotland than on average, and wouldn't this make a perfect wedding gift for a bride?
