Vintage Dog Weathervane Silver Brooch Pin Dated 1934
Every now and then, I find a piece that so surprises me and I have to bring it home. This fabulous Art Deco brooch is one of those pieces: A dog! A roof! A weathervane?! The fine detail of the animal’s glossy fur and its attentive, dignified posture is remarkable. Given the canine’s poise, it is most likely a hunting-dog or show-dog. Beneath the dog is a weathervane, which is cleverly crafted to give dimension and perspective. The strong geometric shape, the triangle apex of the roof, keeps the brooch firmly in the Art Deco family, but the dog and weathervane personalize and soften the effect. Both tender and strongly angular, this silver brooch is guaranteed to attract attention and encourage inquisitive conversation.
This curious brooch is quite lustrous, as the silver was fashioned to be smooth and reflective. Measuring 93.4 mm high and 38.1 mm wide, it is definitely a statement piece. It weighs 19 grams and bears several marks: a crown, a lion, r (for 1934), and the maker’s mark “M&W.”
This would be a wonderful gift for someone special in your life. Or make it your own! Clasped onto your scarf or lapel, it will certainly turn heads, and maybe wag some tails!
