Victorian Memorial Enamel Gold Brooch Pin Inscribed 1879 'Dear Helen'

I personally kind of love it, imagine that you lived in a time when photographs didn’t exist, I know that’s a tough imagining given that almost every one of us now walks around with a camera and video recorder in our pockets. But, just imagine that you didn’t have a picture of your mother or sister or beloved aunt. All you have of them when they are gone is a lock of their hair, a little piece of them that you can cherish and keep close. That’s why I love hair jewelry, for the love, the sentiment, the bit of someone lost that can be held close in remembrance.

This hair belonged to Dear Helen, whoever she was. She died on June 10th, 1879, and clearly she was missed as someone had this wonderful brooch made in her honor. The front features black enamel letters that spell ‘In-Memory’ and a lovely vining floral motif, the hair and gold string are set with a bit of ivory silk behind beveled crystal. This brooch is otherwise unmarked, it tests as 15 karat gold with a steel pin stem. The brooch measures 25.2 mm from north to south and 33 mm across, it weighs 7.5 grams.
