I sat in an Adirondack chair the way they’re supposed to be sat in – in the mountains with a thermos of hot chocolate with a lingering taste of cinnamon liqueur. A soft sheep’s wool blanket was draped over my lap, and a crackling fire was burning a few feet away, casting a warm glow. I heard the chattering of chickadees and the swooshes of a barred owl’s wings as the sun began to sink into the earth.
“Victoria, did you see that?”
“That spark. It must have come from your hand.” I lifted my decorated finger and held it closer to the flames. It sparked again.
“Oh no darling, that came from a ruby.”
This beautiful Victorian ring was handcrafted in Birmingham, England in 1900. There are two dark pink rubies flanking an old European cut diamond, gypsy-set in 18 karat gold across the face. The diamond measures 1.6 x 1.6 x 1.1 mm and weighs approximately .02 carats. Each of the rubies measure 2.3 x 2.3 x 1.4 mm and weigh approximately .05 carats each. This antique ring’s shoulders feature an elegant scrolling motif. This ring weighs 2.2 grams and is a size 7.65. The ring face measures 7 mm north to south and 15 mm across, it sits 2.2 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.2 mm at the back of the band. This piece has been fully hallmarked. It bears the crown mark for England, the gold purity mark, “18”, the anchor mark for Birmingham, and the date letter, “a”. It also has a maker’s mark that reads, “S.M”.
Rings like this encompass that familiar feel of something grand. Blame it on the gold, and probably the gemstones, too.
