I know that some of you are opposed to any little change in a piece of jewelry, but if you’re like me, you don’t mind a little bit of up-cycling when it comes to your gems. This pair of earrings do doubt started life out as either one cufflink or a pair of buttons, and somewhere along the line they were cleverly converted to this wonderful pair of rich red garnet earrings!
These lovely studs are set with 20 garnets each with the largest center stone measuring 3.5 mm across. The earrings themselves are 10.8 mm in diameter and sit 6.5 mm off the ear. These lovelies were originally made in garnet (low karat) gold and the posts that were added are 9 karat, very typical of English jewelry. The tops date to the Victorian era, circa 1880, the posts are probably within the last 50 years. These earrings are marked ’375’ to the backs and weigh 2.6 grams in total.
I’m not gonna lie, I love these, they are the perfect vacation earrings, they promised to get noticed, they go with everything and they are way more interesting and mysterious than a plain old stud.
