I come across a lot of earrings while shopping in France that have the unique French style back to front closure. Normally I pass on them as some folks find them a bit confusing, but I simply couldn't resist these wonderful, French Neoclassical gold beauties, after all a good gold earring is hard to find.
These early earrings are completely hand crafted of 18 karat gold. They are a very wearable size and measure 27 mm from top to bottom and 17.4 mm across. They are hallmarked with a single struck eagles head mark and a makers mark, indicating that they were made in France, circa 1780, of 18 karat gold. Together they weigh 4.6 grams.
Back to front earrings work just as they sound, the earring goes through the ear from behind and clips in the front. They are extremely comfortable to wear, but it can take a little time getting used to putting them on. The key is to wiggle the earring instead of trying to just push it through. Don't be surprised if you get hooked on this style of closure once you get used to it!
