Antique French Art Nouveau Diamond Bypass Ring

He asked for her hand in the early hours of the morning, before either of them had had their coffee. The sun was hardly making light out their small apartment window, that had a faraway view of the harbor. She was barely waking up, when he gently whispered her name and asked if they could do this life thing together, “Me and you? Forever?” She nodded with a smile of knowing and love, as he slipped a diamond gold ring on her finger.

This antique Art Nouveau diamond bypass style ring was handcrafted in France, around 1900. The design is elegant and defines the Art Nouveau period it was made in with its smooth elements and graceful flower-inspired motif. There are seven rose cut diamonds and two Old European diamonds, set in platinum over 18 karat gold. The Old European diamonds measure 3 x 2 mm. The ring face measures 14 x 8.5 x 4.6 mm. It’s a size 6.25 and weighs 3.0 grams. It bears the French eagle’s head mark, and has been acid tested.

Bypass rings are known to the French as ‘Toi et Moi’ rings, meaning, ‘You and Me’. They were most used during the 1800s, as its romantic design symbolizes two souls coming together in love. The sides of the band don’t meet in the middle, they gracefully pass one another, to express individuality and fluidity.
