Antique Dutch Silver Fob Seal Crest Pendant, c. 1910

There must be a man in Europe who writes letters with a feather quill, who scribbles his words in loopy cursive letters, who when he pauses, places his finger to his chin to ponder. His spectacles are round and silver and magnify his blue eyes beneath the lenses. His hair is dark brown, like baking chocolate, and there are strands of gray on the edges of his face. He carefully places his parchment inside a corresponding envelope and when he closes it, he closes it with this seal and some crimson wax.

This Dutch oval seal was handcrafted in silver around 1910. It features a crest and shield of a sea fish wearing a regal five point crown. This stately piece has been hallmarked with a cursive ‘I’, which is the Dutch mark for minimum silver fineness of 250. The maker’s mark looks to read, ‘FE’ in the diamond cartouche. This charming seal weighs 12.5 grams and measures 32 x 22 mm.

Imagine clandestine meetings and secrets in letters all tied together with a seal. It could be this seal that helps guard your words and correspondents. It would also make a fantastic bauble on a silver chain or watch chain!
