Antique Art Nouveau Diamond Gold Slide Locket 18k French
They had been married for two days when they set off for Paris. They arrived a week later, it was spring time in Paris, the most beautiful time of the year. They were there on their honeymoon and they would attend the Grande Opening of the Exposition Universelle of 1900, the World’s Fair. They would see the stunningly elaborate Porte Monumental on the Place de la Concorde, ride the Grande Roue, the tallest ferris wheel in the world. They would wander the Champs-Élysées and the fabulously impressive and newly finished Grand Palais. The Palace of Electricity and the Water Castle were her favorites. On their last day he bought her a locket to remember the fair by. It was in the new Art Nouveau style that had been featured so prominently throughout the fair and in the streets, buildings and art of Paris. She loved it, and him, and decades later when she bounced their grandchildren on her knee she told them the story of the locket and of those magical day in Paris when the world was shiny and new.
Hand crafted in about 1900, this stunning slide locket features a woman in profile. She wears a tiara and a collar of rose cut diamonds and is done in elaborate detail. Inside the locket are two frames, one contains on old mirror that’s missing a bit of its silver backing, it could be removed upon request. The locket is 41.2 mm from top to bottom and 28.5 mm across, it’s 6 mm thick. This locket is marked ‘750’ indicating it’s content of 18 karat gold. I suspect that it is French in origin, although it bears no marks. This locket weighs 15.5 grams.
Was she at the Worlds Fair in 1900? Very, very possibly she was.
