Antique WWI English Bulldog Brooch Pin Enameled Flag

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June of 1914 was the trigger that launched the Great War of 1914-1918, which we now call World War I. The English tried to stay out of the war, but on August 4th the Germans came through Belgium and attacked France and England could no longer ignore the treat, within days they were officially at war. English patriotism was high during war time and this ‘Bully’ bulldog holding a Union Jack in his mouth was just one symbol of this national feeling.

This wonderful brooch was hand crafted in sterling silver in 1914. It is beautifully rendered with great attention to detail, the bright enameled colors of the British flag really pop! This wonderful piece is marked to the reverse with the word ‘silver’ and a Registration number, ‘REGd 644039’, indicating the date of origin. The doggie measures 21.4 mm north to south and 35.2 mm across and weighs 3.8 grams.
