Georgian Mirror Intaglio Fob Pendant Chalcedony 15k Gold
In 1812 Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published a collection of German fairy tales and stories that they had culled from old texts as well as from friends and family. They published 87 tales in their original book, and kept adding to it for many, many years. The tales of the ‘Brother’s Grimm’ would go on to become part of our vernacular, “wake up, Sleeping Beauty”, “leave a trail of breadcrumbs”, “mirror, mirror on the wall”. You just know that the Georgians loved these tales of the macabre, and while they weren’t always thought suitable for children, they got softened and illustrated over the years until they became the tales we all grew up with.
This wonderful intaglio is just that, a mirror, classic, Snow White style, with a lovely frame and a bow at the top. The intaglio carving is in chalcedony and this fob tests as 15 karat gold, it is late Georgian, dating to about 1830. This fob is a larger sized one, measuring 35 mm from top to bottom and 19x24 mm at the face, it weighs 8.8 grams. This fob is unmarked and has been carefully acid tested to verify gold content.
“Mirror, mirror, on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all?”. You’re looking at her!
