Antique French Intaglio Ring, Count's Ring

Most likely this ring was made for a little Count. In France they are called ‘Comte’ and are recognized as having nine equal pearls topping their crown or coronet. Was he a child when he received this ring, or perhaps a small man. This ring is mighty in it’s style but diminutive in its ring-size.

A square of carnelian is carved with a crown on the top of this 18 karat gold hand crafted French ring. Called a ‘seal’ or ‘intaglio’ ring, this style was worn by many a nobel, often on the pinky finger for ease of sealing letters. The carnelian measures 9.8 x 8.3 mm and the face of the ring overall measures 12.3 mm north to south and 11 mm across and narrows to 4 mm at the back of the band. The shank is chunky and crafted in 18 karat gold, it has the single struck eagles head assay mark which means that it was made in France before 1847 and has a minimum fineness of 18 karat gold. This ring is a size 2.75, yes you read that right! I have discussed it with my jeweler and we can re-size it somewhat, feel free to contact me with your sizing request and I can let you know if this ring can accommodate it. This ring weighs 9.2 grams.
