If you love antiques (like I do) and you love jewelry (like I do), then you will be thrilled by this fantastic Victorian memorial ring (like I was). Everyone always asks me for more history on my items and sometimes I have it and sometimes I don't. That's only one of the reasons that I adore pieces like this one, they come with a history written right in.
Gorgeously handcrafted in 18 karat gold, this ring is set with a 4 mm sparkling, round faceted, bright red ruby. Encircling the ring are 12 panels, each of which contains a letter (or a floral rondel in between the words). The panels each have a raised letter surrounded by black enamel and the ring spells out "In Memory Of" in lovely Gothic script. The inside of the band is inscribed with "Obt 16th Sepr, 1846, At 42" and the name "Mary Dickinson". This ring is also hallmarked with the marks for having been made in London, England, in 1843 by the firm 'SJ,SC'. This ring is a size 8.5 and could not be resized without damage to the ring. The black enamel is in very nice condition, it shows some loss on the back of the band. The ring measures 11 mm north to south on the front of the ring and narrows to 5 mm at the back of the band. This ring weighs 6.9 grams.
Alas for poor Mary Dickinson, dead at 42. Wait, that was actually probably a pretty long life back in 1843!
