Early Victorian Garnet Enamel Memorial Locket Pendant

$ 1,850.00

Alas for Poor Mrs. Lucy Boggett, she passed away at what today is the very youthful age of 49. Not, really, though, back in the time when Lucy Lived, the average life expectancy wasn’t much more than 40, even 30 was considered pretty old. So, at 49 Lucy must have seemed a much distinguished old lady when she died on March the 27th of 1834.

This wonderful Georgian pendant is decorated with a beautiful foliate pattern in black enamel around a lovely central cabochon of rich maroon garnet. The reverse is engraved at the top with “In Memory Of’ in elaborate Gothic script and underneath is inscribed “Mrs. Lucy Boggett, died 27 March 1834, aged 49”. The center back is a locket with a crystal center over a very finely woven plat of hair. This locket measures 39.6 mm from north to south and 27.1 mm across, and weighs 5.6 grams. This unmarked locket has been acid tested as 15 karat gold.
