Gorgeous Enamel Miniature Baby Portrait Pendant Locket 15k Gold Pearls

Sometimes a jewel is just the sum of its parts, take a diamond and set it in some platinum, boom! You’re done. Other times a jewel is much more along the lines of art, much more than that sum of its parts, much more than oil paints and canvas. It certainly keeps my job interesting, finding that happy balance between the two.

This stunningly crafted pendant definitely falls on the side of art. The jewel itself is beautifully hand crafted in 15 karat gold with a bloomed finish and is enamel with a bright, cobalt blue enamel over a patterned gold to give it a three dimensional feel. It is set with four creamy white pearls that all appear to be original to the piece. The star, though, of course, is this fantastically executed miniature enamel painting of a cherubic baby in a white, probably Christening, gown.

I don’t think that this wonderful piece is a memorial piece, although the back does hold a locket set with a plait of finely woven hair behind a crystal. I think it’s rather a mother’s piece, a celebration of a beautiful baby.

The pendant measures 44.5 mm from top to bottom and 28 mm across, it’s marked on the back with ’15ct’ for the gold content and ‘H&Co’ for the maker, possibly Hamilton and Company. This fabulous English piece dates to about 1880-1890, it weighs 7.5 grams and is in wonderful condition with no notable nicks to the enamel.
