Sometimes roses surprise me. One I thought had died all of the sudden pops out a new shoot and climbs the side of my garden, wrapping itself around and around, reaching for the sun. By August my garden buzzes with fat bees and smells heavenly, the rich roses releasing their heady fragrance in the summer heat.
Roses, the beauty and the thorn, have long symbolized love and matters of the heart. Perhaps that’s because of the fact that they can be an overwhelming delight for the senses one second and stab us with pain the next?
This wonderful rose locket is so beautifully painted that you can almost smell it. The rich, velvety red rose is set off by a white enamel with a kiss of gray and blue. The locket is machine turned to give the enamel a lively movement and depth of feel. This silver locket has two frames to hold your photos. The locket measures 37 mm north to south including the bale and 32.8 mm across at the widest point, it’s 6.4 mm thick and weighs 17.8 grams. This locket tests as silver and is marked with the makers mark of ‘GBM’. Hand crafted in about 1900.
A note from Victoria: As with any lockets, particular care should be taken when closing enamel lockets, always shut the locket by pushing on the metal edge, never put pressure on the enamel itself.
