I don’t know why, but I always seem to remember the first piece I buy on every trip. Maybe it’s the anticipation of shopping, the excitement of the journey, the jet lag? Whatever it is, I remember buying this necklace, the first piece on a trip to England, on a cold and rainy early Spring day. After an early morning, a long train ride and then a bus, I was finally at the Newark fairgrounds, north of London. I went first to the one indoor building to see a few dealers I know (and get out of the rain). I was walking by the stall of someone I’ve never bought from before when this necklace simply jumped out at me, I had to stop, had to look, there may have been a bit of love at first sight. In an instant it was already so memorable to me, I simply knew that it would be my first piece.
Completely hand crafted in that very definitive Arts and Crafts style is this fantastic antique silver necklace set with sparkling cognac colored citrines and a large blister pearl. This necklace was made around 1890-1900, at the height of the Arts and Crafts movement, most likely in England. This style of work and combination of materials is very in keeping with what was being retailed by the likes of Liberty and Co. at this time. The colors are superb, the patina on the silver is just right, the rich golden glow of the citrines contrasts just right with the creamy white of the pearl.
This choker necklace is completely unmarked, which is fairly typical of these Arts and Crafts pieces. It is set with 2 oval faceted and 8 round faceted, citrines with lots of sparkle and a single larger oval blister pearl at the center. The lovely and unusual chain culminates in a T bar and hoop style clasp. This necklace measures 15 inches from clasp to clasp and the center drop is 3 inches long and 1.75 inches wide at the widest part. It weighs 17 grams.
As a lover of Arts and Crafts style anything, furniture, architecture, gems, I was totally surprised and delighted to find this necklace in a stall in the middle of a horse field in the North of England. I had to bring it home. For you.
