Antique Victorian Sardonyx Gold Signet Ring '1874'
Howard Carter would grow up with an insatiable appetite for discovery, in his 48th year he would make one of the most important archaeological finds of all time when on November 26th, using a small chisel that had been a 17th birthday gift from his Grandmother, he knocked out the first brick that had sealed the tomb of the young Egyptian King, Tut Ankh Amun (Tutankhamun). When he raised his candle and peered into the tomb, his assistant asked him “Can you see anything?” to which Carter answered, “Yes, wonderful things!”.
This ring was made in Birmingham England in the same year that Carter was born. The style on this ring has a distinctive Victorian Egyptian Revival feel to it, perhaps a foreshadowing of what was to come for the infant Carter? This ring was hand crafted in 15 karat gold and has a great softness and patina as well as a weighty hand feel. The ring is set with an oval of sardonyx. the stone has been carefully cut so that a vein of what floats on a vein of red. This allowed a carver to carve a pattern in the stone which would produce a wonderful red pattern.
This fantastic ring measures 15.5 mm north to south and 20 mm across at the face, it sits just 4 mm off the finger and narrows to 3.1 mm at the back of the band. This ring is a size 8.5, it’s a perfect sized signet that would suit a man or a woman. This ring is fully hallmarked with English marks that show it was made in 1874 of 15 karat gold by the firm ‘H&U’.
