Antique Victorian Scottish Agate Cross Shield Earrings Silver

$ 680.00

Queen Victoria held balls at Balmoral and dressed in full Tartan as did most of her guests, earrings like these would have been rocked at a ball like that, along with plaids and sashes. Many of these jewels weren’t actually produced in Scotland, though, often they were made in England, in places like Birmingham, and then exported up to Scotland to be be scooped up by English tourists!

Here is a very particularly fabulous pair of ‘Scottish’ earrings, also sometimes called ‘Pebble Jewelry’ because they are set with agate rock. This pair is set with a variety of colorful agates including carnelian and Montrose agate. They are beautifully hand crafted and they are large enough to make a great statement; they measure 32.7 mm from top tot bottom and 17.8 mm across at the widest part. Together this pair weighs 7.9 grams. This pair is unmarked but has been acid tested as sterling silver.

Hand crafted, most likely in England, in about 1870.
