Victorian Carnelian Intaglio Ring Lion Rampant

This ring has swagger. Yeah, you heard me, swagger. What’s that, you ask? Well, confidence, perhaps even a bit arrogance; it’s mostly in the hips.

This large and lovely ring is set with a deeply carved intaglio of a lion rampant in a crown done in rich, orange carnelian. I believe that this intaglio predates this wonderful ring by quite a lot, probably the stone dates to about 1870, it’s difficult to say when it was set into this ring, I purchased it this way and it shows definite signs of wear, so it’s been here awhile. This large ring measures 23.8 mm from north to south at the face and is 20.5 mm across, it sits 4.1 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.3 mm at the back of the band. This size 7.5 ring weighs 7.2 grams. This unmarked ring tests as 15 karat gold.
