Shopping on Portobello Road in London on a cool Saturday morning, I ducked into a long, narrow gallery. You know the one, with all the photos in the front of the London skyline and double decker buses, where all the tourist buy prints to take home. I squeeze through the crowd of people flipping through photos in bins and walked down the stairs into the even narrower lower level. My friend stood behind her counter with a loupe to her eye, looking at some items a handsome young man had pulled out of a velvet pouch, I waited for her to look my way. She saw me and her eyes lit up and without missing a beat she reached over and dropped this ring in my hand.
She knew I wouldn’t be able to resist this wonderful hand crafted Edwardian beauty. Set with three rich maroon colored sparkling faceted oval garnets and two oval cabochons of opal, this ring is given added sparkle by the little round diamonds set between each stone. This ring measures 8 mm north to south and 23 mm across, it sits 3.8 mm off the finger and narrows to 1.9 mm at the back of the band. This size 7 ring was made in about 1915 of 9 karat gold and is marked ‘9ct’, it weighs 5.9 grams.
