To the Victorians, the orchid represented rare and delicate beauty. They were seen as exotic, from the East, rare and in need of special care in a hothouse. Orchids are symmetrical and so they became associated with perfection. Dried and ground orchid tubers were used in love potions as the plant was considered an aphrodisiac.
This pretty enameled gold orchid pendant was handcrafted around 1900 in Europe. It’s a yellow and pink flower set in 18 karat gold. An Old European cut diamond, measuring 3 mm in diameter, sits at the very center of the orchid, with two smaller diamonds, measuring 1.35 mm in diameter, next to it. This pendant becomes a brooch when the hook and pin are screwed into the back. It’s a versatile piece ready for day to night. Overall, this pendant measures 30.6 x 33 x 14.8 mm and weighs 10.3 grams. It is unmarked and has been acid tested.
Confucius admired orchids and was quoted to have said, “The orchid grows where others cannot, enduring the hardships of hunger and thirst, and is loosely tied to the things that support it. And, even with all the difficulty of its life, the orchid graces the world with beautiful color and rare fragrance. This is like the life of the true gentleman, who sets himself to learn self-discipline, and whose character shines no matter where he is or what he experiences.”
