Vintage Plique a Jour Enamel Virgin Mary Pendant 18k Gold French

I used to shop in Paris for beautiful French jewels, but more and more lately I’ve become smitten by the antique shops and markets in the wonderful town of Versailles. Famous for it’s fantastic palace and gardens, the town outside the palace gates is such a gem, great restaurants and markets abound. I found this beauty there, and many others besides.

This stunning plique-a-jour pendant features the Virgin Mary at its center surrounded by rays of golden sun and blue enamel. French for ‘light of day’, plique-a-jour was a type of open enamel work that the French excelled at. This beautiful pendant does have a tiny bit of damage near the top but I forgave it as it’s such a wonderful piece. It’s hallmarked with the French eagles head mark, indicating that it’s crafted in 18 karat gold. The back of the pendant is engraved with a monogram of AG and dated ’12 Juillet 1929’ for the 12th of July, 1929. I suspect that this pendant was made before this date and inscribed sometime later, it probably dates to about 1900-1910. This pendant measures 32 mm top to bottom and 23 mm across, it weighs 3.8 grams.
