You know that scene in Men in Black where they realize that the missing Galaxy is actually tiny and is being worn on the collar of a cat named Orion (it's on Orion’s Belt, get it?)? Whenever I see opals like this one, it always makes me think of that scene and wonder, is there a galaxy in there? It certainly looks like there could be, swirling nebula and far-away galaxies all captured forever within this glowing gem. When you take a stone as beautiful as this and set it into a completely beguiling ring crafted as two serpents with ruby set heads, the result is other-worldly indeed.
This absolute stunner of a French ring is large in scale and really takes up some real estate on the finger. Hand crafted in 18 karat gold, this ring likely dates to the Art Deco era and it has a decidedly Egyptian Revival feel. The center of this eye-catching ring is a cabochon cut Lighting Ridge Crystal opal of approximately 2 carats (9x9x4.3mm), with a play of color concentrating on blues and greens with flashes of red and glowing orange, this stone truly looks lit from within. The snakes above and below it are set with cabochon rubies, each measuring 3.7x2.7mm. The face of this ring measures 25.5 mm north to south and 20.5 mm across, it sits 7 mm off the finger and narrows to 5.4 mm at the back of the band. This ring is a hefty 11.5 grams in weight and a size 8. It is hallmarked on the back of the ring with French marks, the eagles head fineness mark for 18 karat gold and a French makers mark.
This gorgeous and important ring would look equally fantastic on a man or a woman and could be resized somewhat to suit.
