Victorian Intaglio Seal Ring Large Men's 9k Gold

I love a good intaglio, and the sone has so much going on, I was delighted when I came across it at the booth of a good friend on a Saturday morning on Portobello Road market in London. The carving has so much detail, and it’s big, so these details aren’t too difficult to see. The smooth oval of rich, yellow carnelian is carved with a shield shaped crest. The crest shows a Lion rampant in one corner, surrounded by a detailed pattern of checks set with stars, the center shows a clock face with hands at ten to twelve on a striped ground. A bird, perhaps a stork, sits atop the crest and below is a banner which reads ‘Indico Utere’ which translates from Latin as ‘Improve by my Admonition’, which basically means that you will improve yourself by heading my warning.

This ring was likely made for a man but a woman with larger hands could rock it quite well. The stone itself measures 30.8x25x5 mm and the ring face measures 30.8 mm north to south and 25 mm across, it sits 5 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.4 mm at the back of the band. The ring is a size 8.75 and could be resized to suit, it weighs 11 grams. This ring is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested as 9 karat gold.

This Victorian beauty was made in England around 1870, it is a gorgeous example and is sure to be a conversation starter.
