Victorian Sardonyx Memorial Ring 18k Gold Memento Mori

Memento Mori is a phrase you may have heard, maybe you know that it is used as a term for memorial jewelry, but do you know what it translates as? It means “Remember that you will die”; be ready and live life knowing that at any hour it may end. The Victorians were big on this idea, living as if you may die. It’s the center of many works of art and literature, think of Dicken’s ‘A Christmas Carol’, for one.

The Victorians had an encyclopedic knowledge of symbolism and this ring showcases a carved Sardonyx stone with an image of weeping will, symbolizing mourning, grief and earthly sorrow as well as an urn symbolizing the return of the body to dust. The stone is set into a wonderfully carved ring of 18 karat gold, it is unmarked but we’ve acid tested it just to be sure. This ring was hand crafted in England in about 1860, it measures 12.4 mm north to south and 19.6 mm across at the front and sits 3,9 mm off the finger. This wonderful and richly sentimental ring is a size 7.5 and weighs 2.5 grams.
