This antique, Arts and Crafts, silver and amethyst brooch was handcrafted around 1910. It was designed by the famed Jessie M King, who was a successful artist and designer. King began her career as a book cover designer and illustrator. In around 1904 she began to design fabric for the well-known department store, Liberty & Co.. Shortly thereafter, she started designing jewelry for Liberty. This turquoise colored enameled flower brooch was one of those pieces. It measures 28.7 x 18 mm. It features a faceted round amethyst at the center, measuring 4.8 x 4.8 x 3.4 mm and weighing approximately .37 carats. This stone pairs perfectly with the bright blue enamel that cover the silver flower petals. It weighs 5.0 grams and has been acid tested.
Jessie M King was born in Scotland, in 1875. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and, in 1905, became a member of the historic Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. She was influenced by the Glasgow Style movement that began in the late 1880s. Eventually, she ended up influencing the movement itself, and was known as one of the Glasgow Girls. During this period of enlightenment, women artists had a short era of international visibility. They inspired other women in terms of art, women’s suffrage, and women’s equality.
This brooch was designed and crafted during this time period, and would be a stylish addiction to any art history buff’s jewelry box!
