3rd Century Roman Intaglio Carnelian Gold Ring 18k
As an antiques dealer, I always get a little thrill when I come across something very, very old. So, when one of the most knowledgeable dealers in antique jewelry that I know in London placed this beautiful ring in my hand and told me that it was a Victorian made ring set with a 3rd century Roman intaglio, I just felt like it had to be mine, even if only for a brief period in its incredibly long history.
This gorgeous slice of rich orange carnelian is carved with a bird and greek letters, it is set into a chunky ring that was likely made in Victorian England. Often times people traveling on their Grand Tour around Europe would pick up souvenirs like this old intaglio and then take them home to England to be set into jewelry, as was almost certainly the case here. The stone measures 14.2 mm north to south and 16 mm across and the ring face is 16.8 mm north to south and 27 mm across, it sits 5.5 mm off the finger and narrows to 2.9 mm at the back fo the band. This large ring is a size 11.25 and weighs 16.7 grams. It’s a manly ring, but certainly intriguing enough for a woman. The ring is unmarked but has been carefully acid tested as 18 karat gold.
