Antique Essex Crystal Horse Brooch Pin Victorian

I’m always ravenous for pieces of art that can be worn and shown off. And pieces like these, with endless charm and flattery, are by far my favorite. There’s a sweetness with this piece that stems from the jeweler’s love for his craft. There’s tradition with this piece, illuminated from the idea of nature. There’s a fashion with this piece, found in the ratios of gold, crystal, and paint, which give a sense of perfect artistic balance.

This antique Victorian gold Essex crystal brooch was handcrafted in England around 1880. It features a detailed motif of a horse and bridle, set in 15 karat gold. It’s a round pin that measures 22.4 mm in diameter and weighs 8.4 grams. It bears the hallmark, “V” and a maker’s mark. This brooch has been acid tested.

This type of reverse cut and painted rock crystal is commonly called an Essex Crystal. It’s made by taking a smooth round rock crystal, and cabochon cutting it, then deeply reverse-carving it. The stone is then hand-painted from the back. It’s a tedious process that takes many man hours. Of course, every minute of work on this piece was absolutely worth it!
