Vintage Amethyst Teardrop Ring Gold 16+ Carats

Until the 18th century, amethysts were considered a cardinal gemstone, they were as valuable as diamonds. During the 18th century, extensive deposits of amethysts were discovered in Brazil causing the gemstone to lose its coveted value. For centuries, however, amethysts have adorned the heads and fingers of British and Russian royalty, as well as clergyman. Today, this gemstone remains rich in color and bold in beauty.

This vintage English amethyst and 9 karat gold ring was handcrafted around 1940. A violet pear-shaped amethyst is set at the center, weighing approximately 16.69 carats. The stone measures 22.4 x 14.6 x 10.7 mm. The shank is hallmarked with the gold purity of “9CT”. This sparkling cocktail ring is a size 6.75 and weighs 8.0 grams.

The word, “amethyst” originates from the Greek word, “amethystos”, which is translated to, “not drunken”. The gemstone was considered an antidote to intoxication by the ancient Greeks and Romans. They crafted drinking vessels from the stone, believing it would prevent drunkenness.
