Like clouds on fire at sunset, like volatile ancient galaxies, opals like this just capture your gaze and refuse to let go. Ancient stories tell of the God of Storms who became so jealous of the God of Rainbows that he broke him all to pieces and where those fractured pieces landed, the ground turned to opals. It's easy to see why one might believe such tales, for opals such as this defy logic, their fantastical glowing auroras seem other worldly, a painted universe encapsulated.
This fantastical jewel was hand crafted around 1880-1890 in England, it is made of 15 karat gold and the diamonds are set in silver. The fabulous lightning ridge opal measures 8.4 mm across and 4 mm deep, it is set at the center of this wonderful convertible brooch pendant which has a pin stem at the back that screws off so that it lays perfectly when worn as a pendant. The opal is surrounded by 32 old European cut diamonds which add up to 1.92 carats in total diamond weight. The piece measures 25.5 mm north to south and across and weighs 6.6 grams.
