I am just a little bit embarrassed to admit that I was an antique jewelry dealer for years before I realized why these lovely rings were referred to as ‘boat rings’. Its not that I thought that sailors wore them, or that they were perfect for cocktails on the boat at sunset (which they are, btw), no, to be honest I just never bothered to wonder. Well, I guess to most of you it might be obvious, it’s the shape of them, just like a ship seen from above. I guess if you lived in England in the early 20th century, you were pretty intimate with travel by sea and the shape similarity just jumped right out at ya?
This fantastic ‘boat’ ring is set with five oval faceted rich blue sapphires the color of the sea and surrounded by a ring of diamonds as bright and white as sea foam in sunlight. The ring mesmerizes and sparkles with every move! The five oval cut sapphires add up to a total carat weight of about 1.10 carats, the 18 surrounding diamonds are old European cuts of about .070 carats, .72 carats in total. The ring measures 9.5 mm from north to south and 20 mm across at at the face and sits 4.6 mm off the finger, ir narrows to 2.5 mm at the back of the bank. This ring is marked ‘18ct’, it is a size 7.25 and weighs 5.9 grams.
