18th Century 18k Gold Cross Crucifix Pendant

Cruci fixus in Latin means ‘one fixed to a cross’, and this early golden cross depicts just this. This early cross depicts Jesus on the cross. Above him is a banner which has ‘INRI’ on it, this stands for ‘Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum, which is Latin for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”’ Under the feet of Jesus is a skull and bones which is reference to the place of crucifixion, the Golgotha, the ’skull place’. Most likely this cross was originally made for and used by the clergy.

This beautifully made cross was hand crafted around 1750 of 18 karat gold. The pendant measures 62.2 mm from top to bottom and 38.2 mm across, it is 38 mm thick. This cross has the initials E and G hand etched into the reverse and is otherwise unmarked, it has been carefully acid tested to verify the gold content and it weighs 7 grams. This is a wonderful piece of pious history.
