Antique Alpaca Owl and Oak Seal

Athena, the Greek goddess of war, craft, and wisdom, was the daughter of Zeus. She was born fully grown in a body of armor and fought to protect civilization. From her beginning, she was depicted with birds, eventually the owl, typically seen perching on her arm. Ultimately, the owl became synonymous with her. As time passed, the owl developed into its own symbol of wisdom and benevolence, a meaning that still lingers to this day.

This antique Victorian owl seal was handcrafted in England around 1900. This charming seal showcases a cheeky owl perched on a leafing oak tree branch. It measures 76.3 x 25 x 15.2 mm and weighs 25.4 grams. It’s hallmarked, “Hoka” and “PR. NS. ALP”. This seal is silver in color but is made of alpaca, an alloy containing copper, zinc, and nickel along with tin.

This beautiful seal is one of my favorites. It’s unique, and full of symbology!
