The Art Nouveau and Jugendstil movements that flourished across Europe in the days between the dawning of the 20th Century and breakout of World War I produced, in my estimation, art and jewelry of sublime refined elegance. The curvilinear forms of this style that pushed back on mechanization and re-ephasized hand craftsmanship were born out in art, architecture and fashion; but no where were they as beautifully executed or as prevalent as in jewelry. While the style that emerged out of WWI would be the sharper lines and spikes of Art Deco, this softly beautiful style, that was only produced for a brevity, has never losts its appeal.
This beautiful silver chalcedony necklace was handcrafted around 1900. This German-made stunner from the Jugendstil movement features at its center, a glowing cabochon cut Chrysoprase gem which measures 11x8x4 mm and weighs about 2.52 carats. The stone forms the center of this somewhat enigmatic shaped necklace. Wings or leaves of black and green enamel reach out from two smaller round chrysoprase gems, their wonderful soft lines so appealing. A river pearl hangs from the bottom giving a bit of extra movement to this charmingly elegant necklace. The hand crafted chain is 21.25 inches long and the pendant drop measures 45 mm north to south and 43.5 mm across. This piece is marked to the reverse with ’Depose’ and bears the silver fineness mark, “900”, it weighs 11.1 grams.
It is possible that this piece is French Art Nouveau, as they also used ‘Depose’ on their pieces, but it looks and feels more like the Jugenstil pieces of Germany and it lacks French silver assay marks.
