Antique Arts and Crafts Silver Moonstone Pendant

Do you see it? That glow? To be honest, it’s not really the moon caught inside a gem, it just looks that way. In reality, it is called Adularescence, a phenomenon that occurs when light falls between the thin, flat, alternating layers of the two minerals which combine in nature to become Moonstone. When Orthoclase and Albite meet and intermingle something magical happens. In the heat and pressure of the earth, they become one, but as they cool, the newly formed stone separates into very thin stacked and alternating layers. When light passes across these layers, it creates the appearance of a glow moving through the stone. You see, moonstones are not only beautiful, they are one of the many fascinating gifts of the natural world!

This wonderful hand crafted sterling silver and moonstone pendant was made in the Arts and Crafts era, most likely in England, which is where I found it. The moonstones against white are rather clear, but put them in front of a darker background and BOOM! That adularescence doesn’t shy away from being seen. This pendant measures 46 mm from top to bottom and 24.6 mm across and weighs 3.7 grams. It is unmarked but tests as sterling.
