Antique Arts & Crafts Amethyst and Silver Pendant Necklace by Murrle Bennett & Co.

Every time I'm in London I try and sneak a couple of hours to myself to visit Liberty's of London on Regent Street in the West End. This last trip, however, I just didn't have the time to head over to Liberty & Co.. I'd promised my husband some of this special Chocolate he likes and decided to spend my spare moments shopping for him. When I exited the chocolate shop on New Bond Street, I accidentally went right instead of left and got a bit turned around. Imagine my delight when I popped out onto Regent Street, right across from Liberty's! If fate tells you to go look at Arts & Crafts jewelry, you simply must listen!

This is the kind of jewelry that I personally love to wear. Murrle, Bennett & Co. is one of my favorite designers, their Arts & Crafts style just speaks to my soul. The clean lines, the smooth and bright cabochon amethyst gem, the weighty feel and fantastic details, all speak to the designer in my soul.

The pendant was lovingly handcrafted in sterling silver and set with a cabochon amethyst gem in a bright violet color, a natural river pearl hangs below. The pendant was made by the famed Murrle Bennett and Company, an Anglo-German firm started by Ernst Murrle and JB Bennett, which produced pieces for retail by the very store I stood in, Liberty & Co., famous London Arts and Crafts dealers. The company of Murrle Bennett was in existence from 1886-1914, this pendant was most likely made around 1900-1910. It is marked on the back with the Murrle Bennett and Co mark and with a 950 stamp indicating the purity of the silver as fine silver. The overall size is 43 mm from the top of the bale to the bottom of the pendant and 20 mm across, it weighs 9.3 grams. This pendant hangs on a lovely hand crafted silver chain that is 18” long, it is unmarked and I don’t know if it’s original to the pendant, but it’s lovely and looks great with it.

Pendants like this one get noticed, and garner many a compliment. Wear it with everything, from flip flops to full black tie!
