Antique Arts & Crafts Compton Pottery Pendant by Mary Watts

Mary Watts was a Scottish social reformer and artist born in Aldourie in Scotland in 1849. Her family moved to London in the 1860s. Her training began at the Slade and South Kensington School of Art where she was best known for her portrait painting. This is also where she met her husband, artist George Frederic Watts. They wed when she was 36 and he was 69.

Her skills went far beyond painting as she worked in pottery, metalwork, and textiles. In fact, she co-founded the Compton Potters’ Arts Guild and the Arts & Crafts Guild in Compton. She also built and maintained the Watts Gallery to preserve her husband’s work. She is responsible for much of the stunningly beautiful Art Nouveau interior art at Watts Chapel in Compton, England.

Designed by Mary Watts, this antique Arts & Crafts ceramic pendant was handcrafted around 1910 by Compton Pottery. It measures 52.5 x 33.3 x 8.3 mm and weighs 14.7 grams. This piece displays St. Cecelia, the patroness of musicians. This motif shows her playing the organ, dressed in red, with a green frame.

When it came to social reform, Mary didn’t hold back. She was a suffragette and President of the Godalming and District National Union of Women’s Suffrage Society. She also had a passion for employing the impoverished. She truly believed that everyone was capable of creating something beautiful if given the opportunity. She gave jobs to the poor by training them in clay work for the Compton Potters’ Guild and through the preservation of rural handicrafts.
