Antique Victorian Banded Agate Drop Earrings with Gold Adorment

The Victorians loved a good banded agate! Black jewelry had been worn in mourning for decades before Queen Victoria lost Prince Albert when she was just 42. She went into deep mourning and stayed there until the end of her life, some 40 years later. Her joy in jewelry never waned, however, and black jewelry became exceedingly popular, much of it crafted of jet and all sorts of wonderfully shaped banded agate. These earrings are a perfect example of the jewelry of this era.

Handmade in 12 karat gold with 18 karat gold wires, these delicately crafted earrings have fantastic movement and shape. They drop 2 1/8th inches from top to bottom and are 1/2 inch wide at the widest, together they weigh 7.5 grams. Made in England around 1870.

These kind of stunning banded agate earrings are becoming increasingly difficult for me to find!
