Antique Bernard Instone Silver Citrine Dress Clip Pin

Bernard Instone was a designer and silversmith from Birmingham, England who had a large influence in the later British Arts and Crafts movement. He was born in 1891 and passed in 1987. He was highly regarded and his works remain as sought-after collectables today. He was strongly influenced by nature, like in this floral-inspired piece. His designs can be split into two categories – pieces with enamel, and pieces without. This citrine clip belongs to the latter. He often used semi-precious stones, favoring citrines and amethysts. His work included beautiful silver displays of leaves, flowers, intricate mounts, scrolls, and foliage.

This gorgeous Edwardian era citrine and silver clip brooch was handcrafted around 1910. It was made in England by the vastly talented Bernard Instone. It features five oval faceted citrines, the center and largest of which measures 10 x 7 x 4.6 mm and weighs approximately 1.71 carats. Overall, this round clip measures 37 x 35 x 10.5 mm and it weighs 10.0 grams. An engraved insurance mark reads, “K43”. It has been acid tested.

At just 12 years of age, Instone won a scholarship to the Birmingham School of Jewellery where he studied under Arthur Gaskin, learned silversmithing, jewelry, and excelled at everything he did. After school, he went on to work with Paul Cooper, he studied in Berlin with Emil Lettre, and by 1913 he was teaching at Vittoria Street.

In 1920, he set up his own works called Langstone Silver Works. He also created pieces for other jewelers such as Sibyl Dunlop using her hallmark. Instone typically didn’t sign his own work but his pieces are easily recognizable. Liberty was finally able to work with him by the 1940s after putting in 25 years of convincing him.
