I’ve always thought it fascinating how the Celtic traditions throughout the British Isles and Breton survived and flourished, even as Catholicism became the dominant spiritual culture of the region. The Celtic notion of the interconnectedness of heaven and earth, as well as the understanding of the never-ending unfolding of time (way before philosophy of metaphysics came about), was expressed in music and art in both secular and religious objects and functions. It is awe-inspiring that this culture knew so much about the universe; a universe we still can barely fathom!
This gorgeous Celtic Breton Silver Cross is a fabulous example of this blend of philosophy, art, and spirituality. On one side, a loose, energetic interlace in La Tené style resembles a never-ending river, vine, or curvilinear current of life, meant to symbolize the everlasting nature of life itself. On the other side there is an entirely different motif of symmetrically engraved circles, bright silver against a black background, as if the artist was trying to order the spheres and stars of the cosmos. This unique and beautiful cross measures 43.4 mm high by 30.3 mm wide, with a depth of 2 mm. It weighs 7.3 grams. We see at least two hallmarks, which are difficult to decipher, but which lead us to believe it was made around 1890.
