The idea of the heart shape being linked to the concept of love developed in the 15th century. The shape itself dates back further and has been identified in paintings, texts, and other media. However, it probably wasn’t the heart that these artists were conceptualizing. This shape stemmed from the shape of fig leaves, pears, and ivy leaves, which were traditionally associated with fidelity.

This wonderful antique Art Nouveau enamel and silver pendant was handcrafted in Chester, England, in 1910 by famed silver smith Charles Horner. It features brilliant blue and bits of green enamel set on a silver heart motif. This pendant weighs 3.0 grams and measures 42 x 18.6 x 2 mm. It has been fully hallmarked. It bears the date letter, “N”, the wheat sheaves mark for Chester, the lion passant for England, and a maker’s mark that reads, “C.H.”.
