Antique Cut Steel Dragonfly Brooch, c. 1840

"Clouds of insects danced and buzzed in the golden autumn light, and the air was full of the piping of the song-birds. Long, glinting dragonflies shot across the path, or hung tremulous with gauzy wings and gleaming bodies." -Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

The awe inspiring aspect is how the dragonfly accomplishes its objectives with utmost simplicity, effectiveness and well, if you look at proportions, with 20 times as much power in each of its wing strokes as other insects. The best part is that the dragonfly does it with the kind of elegance and grace seen in a veteran ballet dancer.

I have always been a fan of the dragonfly, so when I saw this large, glittering cut steel dragonfly brooch I knew I had to have it!  This beautiful specimen was handcrafted in England sometime around 1840.  It measures 2.3 inches (59 mm) from nose to tail and 2.125 inches (54 mm) from wing tip to wing tip, and weighs 9.1 grams. Add this lovely creature to your collection before it shoots away!
