Antique Davey Lamp Fob Charm with Bloodstone Seal in Sterling Silver

This funky little charm is a silver Davy Lamp, a lamp that was invented in 1815 for use in flammable environs, such as coal mines, to reduce the danger of fires due to methane build-up, a common source of injuries and deaths in the mines.

The charm is set in one end with a round of bloodstone which is carved with the dates 1863 and 1888. This wonderful charm is hand crafted in silver and was likely made in England in about 1888. The charm measures 40 mm north to south and 13 mm across; the bloodstone measures 11 mm across. This detailed charm has the glass globe and small wick of the real thing, it weighs 6.8 grams. This charm was made as a seal, but I found it to be so unusual and interesting that I just couldn’t resist it!
