In my humble opinion, some of the best museums in Europe are located along the gorgeous old brick and cobblestone streets of Amsterdam, along with lovely canals and markets of tulips and amazing architecture, and wonderful food and friendly folk, and…. well, I could go on. If I’m not buying jewels you might find me in one of these lovely museums on my, sadly too infrequent, visits to this loveliest of cities.
On my last visit in early autumn, when I wasn’t touring the Reijksmuseum or lunching at the Cobra Café, I was buying jewels. Here’s one of them, a fantastically sparkly and completely perfect diamond engagement ring.
Set in 14 karat gold, this handcrafted ring boast a lovely and deep sparkling .6 carat Old European cushion cut diamond winking away in a classical prong mount. The diamond is very clean even with a 10x jewelers loupe and about a I/J color (it’s hard to judge as it’s mounted in gold, so I’m erring on the side of caution in my estimate). The sides are set with 5 sparkling rose cut diamonds on each shoulder for a total of 11 diamonds in the ring. The main diamond measures 4.8 mm north to south and 4.4 mm across, it is 3.5 mm deep. This ring is a size 7.75 and could be resized safely by about one size in either direction and no more. It weighs 1.8 grams, and is marked ’14’ for 14 karat gold. Probably Dutch in origin, this perfectly wonderful ring dates to about 1870-1880.
As well as being cultured and truly lovely, Amsterdam is a very romantic city; standing on the Magerebrug bridge over the Amstel river at sunset would make a nice place to ask for her hand (just don’t drop the ring!). Or do what I did, and honeymoon here. I highly recommend getting a top floor room at one of the 17th century bed and breakfasts that are tucked away along the tree lined canals. Climb the stairs to room under the sweeping iconic eves of an Amsterdam room and step back into the feel of an authentic slice of Old Europe.

She met a handsome man wandering the beach during that summer heat wave. He cooked her dinner and they ate by candlelight. He took her dancing in places she never would have found on her own. He had dark eyes and smelled like the sea. They shopped antique markets and he bought her this ring. She never left.

Are you nervous? Don’t be, just relax and pour the champagne. She’ll say yes, you know she will. You’ve known it in deep in you soul since the moment you laid eyes on her. Honestly, you could propose with a piece of string or the wire from the bubbly and she’d still say ‘yes’, but don’t do that, instead try a ring like this one… made to dazzle and then deliver!
This fantastic ring is hand crafted in a nice weighty platinum. It is set with three gorgeous and sparkling Old European cut diamonds, the center stone weighs approximately .9 carats (measures 6.1x6.1x 3.5 mm) and the sides are about . 35 carats each (4.5x4.5x2.7 mm), the ring is beautifully decorated all around the mounting and the mount is set with an additional 16 small single cut diamonds which add up to about .2 carats; so the total weight on this ring adds up to about 1.8 carats of sparkling gems. The stones are on average: VS1-Si1 and G-H in color. This ring measures 6.7 mm north to south and 15 mm across the top, it sits 5.3 mm off the finger and is a size 7.25, it could be re-sized somewhat to suit. There’s a joke about Wisconsin that goes like this: “Welcome to Wisconsin, where we have two seasons, Winter and ‘the other season’ ”. It’s true, winters here do seem to drag on a little too long and take up half the year. And while the winter here is beautiful I find that every once in while I have to hop on a plane and land somewhere (anywhere) lush and green. Just filling my eyes with the rich greens of the tropics does wonders for getting me through until May when the green starts edging back into my landscape. And in between trips to green places, I just pop on a ring like this, I find that a luscious emerald has the same effect on my psyche as a nice long walk in the jungle.
This fantastic diamond and emerald cluster ring showcases an Emerald cut emerald which measures 11.3 x 7 x 4.5 mm and weighs approximately 2.46 carats. The emerald is surrounded with a rectangular frame of Old European Cut diamonds; ten diamonds of .15 carats each are interspersed with twenty smaller .02 carat stones for a total diamond weight of approximately 2 carats. The ring is beautifully hand crafted in platinum with a lovely scrolling gallery underneath, it has a wonderful smooth feel and a low profile. This ring measures 18.8 mm north to south and 14.4 mm across and it sits 5.6 mm off the finger. This ring has some marks but I wasn’t able to sort out what they were because they’re a bit worn, it was certainly made in about 1910 and is European in origin. The ring is a size 6.75 and weighs 5.8 grams.
We are happy to provide a full appraisal on this ring and it’s contents done by a GIA master gemologist upon request, please note that appraisals take a week to ten days to complete.
