– Sold OutHe was everything to her, the one she would grow old with and sit on park benches with, watching pigeons peck the ground. So she decided to take him with her, until her own bittersweet end. All she had to do was close her eyes to feel his charisma, to see his ingenuity, to hear his chuckle. All she had to do was clench her locket, breathe deeply, and know he was next to her.
This Mid-Victorian locket was handcrafted in 15 karat gold around 1860 in England. It’s intricately engraved on all sides, giving it a charmed and royal feel. An oval shaped locket, boasting a cobalt blue enamel cross on the front, opens to reveal a hair plated frame inside-a beautifully woven token to remember a cherished friend or loved one. It has been professionally acid tested. It weighs 3.5 grams and measures 23.2 x 18.1 x 4.5 grams.
Victorian mourning jewelry was worn by both men and women after the loss of a loved one. Queen Victoria lost her beloved Prince Albert when she was merely 42 and stayed in mourning until her death nearly 40 years later. Traditionally, keeping a lock of hair made sense to the surviving since photography wasn’t very common. Families wanted a part of who they lost, and in many cases, they creatively crafted it into something beautiful.
